This interactive installation by the Japanese motion graphics designer Masamichi Shimada is all about using light and technology to bring back some childhood wonder. Birds Fly Around With You is a magical space that takes you back to the time before cinema as we know it was invented. And there was a machine called the Zoetrope instead.
A disc rotated at a certain speed, making still pictures look like they were in motion. As you walk through the bird display, they light up one after the other and create a zoetrope-like illusion of the birds flying.
As more people move around the installation, more birds start to fly. Complex design technology can indeed take you back to your most basic, emotional self, when you are singing in the rain and troubles melt like lemon drops.
